Retreat, August 2015

God loves us just because He loves us, and this fierce love cannot be contained. Intimacy with Him trumps even the best of principles, and real connection boots a clever programme into the tall grass.  His primary way of explaining life to us seems to be through the picture of a healthy family : Father and Son, Bride and Bridegroom, the list goes on.  During August 2015, fifteen men arrived at the lapa under the stars as individuals, but left as brothers.

God moved in ways we could not predict or control. He came with deeply individual tenderness -- a reminder that He fashioned us and thought us up and knows exactly what sets our hearts uniquely alight.   It was beautiful and extraordinary and profound and playful.  And something shifted in us as we got a glimpse of a life we were truly made for.

Our ascent to higher ground from the badlands of pride and fear could not simply have happened through trying harder.  Or, in Bunyan's words, by following the directions of Worldly Wiseman and walking down the path to Morality.  We were drawn by love, and supported by many of you who carried us in prayer.  A special mention has to go to our friend Stephen Klemich, who, in solidarity, physically carried us up the Aiguilles Dorées to the summit of Aiguilles Sans nom (the unnamed needle). Watch his inspiring climb all the way to the end.

Finally, thank you men.  Your vulnerability and courage made our four days together resonate in a remarkable way. I count it a privilege to journey together as we step up into the rarified air.

Glory to Him.
